Welcome to Map 3 of the Mini Burn Family Adventure Race! This section is dedicated to mountain biking and promises to be packed with features and excitement. Unlike our Penllyn Event, where cycling is divided into two phases, this time you'll tackle the entire route in one go.
Here are some highlights and top tips for navigating this exciting phase:
Challenge Level: Don’t underestimate the difficulty, but rest assured, you'll have ample time and support to finish the course. You can opt for a shorter route (approximately 7 km) that avoids the major hill.
Navigation: The route is fully signposted, so no need for advanced navigation skills. Signs are placed at every junction, and there will be floating marshals along the way to assist you.
Motivation and Treats: Expect plenty of encouragement throughout the course, and keep an eye out for treats for the little ones, especially after the toughest sections.
Wildlife: You’ll encounter the park’s beautiful wildlife during your ride. Since it’s October, please do not approach any deer.
Route Details: The first significant climb occurs about a quarter of the way through the course. It’s a sustained but gradual ascent up a gravelly track to the park’s mid-section. You’ll interact with many other families, so use the camaraderie to help push you along.
Course Options: Shortly after the first climb, you’ll reach the split between the long and short courses. You don’t need to decide which route to take until you reach this point. The short course stays at mid-level before descending back to the lower park. Even on the short course, you’ll face one final challenge: the ‘blue run’ (highlighted in green and marked as 2 on the map below). It involves some climbing but is worth it for the fun. Keep going and stay motivated by our signs and treats.
Long Course: If you choose the long course, be prepared for some hike-a-biking during the climb to the top of the park. This is part of the adventure! At the top, you'll find more treats and the only checkpoint on the course to mark your completion of the long route. Enjoy a thrilling descent starting on Broad Track, followed by a fun single trail (highlighted in green and marked as 1 on the map). Be cautious of a small dogleg at the end as you rejoin Cwm Phillips Road. You'll then meet the short course competitors and finish together as described.
Post-Biking: After completing the mountain biking phase, you'll return to the event center for the final challenge, which will be on foot.
