Distance & phases: 2.8km run, 8km mountain bike, 1km kayak & 1km foot navigation phase. (All distances are approximate)
Timing: You will be given a Sport Ident timing chip to wear around your wrist. (One per team) You will be required to present the timing chip at checkpoints around the course. This will give you a time for each of the phases.
Foot phase: A short undulating run around the Truffle field & chicken farm at Penllyn Estate on grass and a little pavement will get you warmed up for the adventure ahead. There will be a checkpoint at the end of the run.
Cycling phase: The cycling is on hard and soft pack trails. There will be some ascent and descent on small stoney tracks and grass and if wet it’s likely to be very muddy in places – It will be an adventure! There will be a small section of road. There will be a short course option of approximately 5km which also avoids the big hill! HELMETS MUST BE WORN. There will be one checkpoint at the top of the hill on the long course and a second one at the end of the bike phase. If you do not own a bike you will need to borrow one from a friend.
Kayaking phase: The kayaking will be around 4 buoys in the lake. There will be plenty of water safety and we will be offering support and instruction if required. All kayaks and kayaking equipment is provided. For this event, the kayaking phase will be midway around the bike course so we will have a small transition area for you to leave your bikes. You may want to carry some waterproof trousers in your bag for the kayaking phase as you will get a wet bottom! Also if you are wearing bike shoes you may want to carry your trainers as the foot orienteering phase will also take place here. There will be a checkpoint at the end of the kayak.
Orienteering phase: Straight after the kayak you will be given a map featuring five checkpoints. All you need to do is find them! There will be time penalties for any checkpoints not found. You will then get back onto your bike to finish off the rest of the course. There will be a finish checkpoint at the end of the course.
Parking: Please park in the farmyard car park. This will be fully signposted when you arrive through the main entrance to Penllyn Estate.
Catering: Hot & cold snacks and drinks will be available to purchase from Forage Farm Shop and Cafe and a Burger Van will be at the event centre in front of the farm shop selling delicious locally produced food. If you’d like a little more luxury then please contact Forage Farm Shop and cafe to book yourself a post-race table for lunch or an early dinner. Tables are limited.
Accommodation: There are log cabins available to rent with Cowbridge Cabins on Penllyn Estate. Please contact them directly to make a booking.
